Humble, TX ZIP Codes and 5 Address Checks Before You Buy

A Humble ZIP code or mailing address doesn’t tell you the city, school district or utility district. Here is how to check each one.

Quick answer

Humble, TX ZIP codes 77338 and 77396 hold all of the City of Humble's land, but a Humble ZIP code or mailing address doesn't prove a home is inside city limits. Before you make an offer on a home for sale in Humble, TX, check five things for the exact address. First, whether it's inside City of Humble limits or only has a Humble mailing address. Then check the taxing units on the HCAD record, the school district, the flood maps and any utility district (MUD). Many homes with a Humble address sit outside city limits.

Humble was incorporated in 1933 and covers about 10 square miles in northeast Harris County. Many homes with a Humble mailing address sit outside those limits, though. Some are in the City of Houston, some in Atascocita and some in unincorporated Harris County. Before you fall for a listing, look up its ZIP code, then run these five checks on the exact address. When you’re ready to tour, start with Humble, TX homes for sale and the neighborhood, school and park details on that page.

Humble, TX ZIP codes at a glance

ZIP codes exist to route mail, so they don’t follow city limits. The U.S. Census Bureau maps them as ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs), which approximate each ZIP code’s footprint. Its 2020 relationship file shows how the Humble-area ZIP codes split between cities and communities:

  • 77338: holds about 70% of the City of Humble’s land, and the City’s own contact address uses it. Only about 26% of this ZIP code’s land is inside Humble city limits, though. About 28% is in the City of Houston, 8% is in Atascocita and 38% is unincorporated land outside any Census-named community.
  • 77396: holds the other 30% of the city. About 12% of this ZIP code’s land is in Humble, 29% is in the City of Houston, 19% is in Atascocita and 40% is unincorporated land outside any Census-named community.
  • 77346: none of this ZIP code falls inside the City of Humble. About 87% is in Atascocita, an unincorporated census-designated place, and 13% is in the City of Houston. Addresses here still carry the Humble name: the federal school directory lists Atascocita High School at 13300 Will Clayton Pkwy, Humble, TX 77346. Shopping in this ZIP? Use the 77346 Atascocita home buyer checklist.
  • 77347: has no Census ZCTA and appears on P.O. box addresses, such as a school campus listed at P.O. Box 2000, Humble, TX 77347. It won’t tell you where a house sits.
  • 77339 and 77345 (Kingwood): schools with Kingwood addresses in the federal directory use these two ZIP codes. The Census places all of 77345 and about 90% of 77339 inside the City of Houston.

Treat those splits as approximate. ZCTAs reflect ZIP codes as of January 1, 2020, and their edges follow census blocks, so a street near a boundary can land on either side. For a specific house, enter the street address in the USPS ZIP Code lookup to get the exact ZIP+4. Then use the five checks below to confirm the city, taxes, schools, flood risk and utility district.

1. City of Humble, or just a Humble mailing address?

The City notes that residential areas such as Atascocita, Kingwood and Forest Cove developed outside its city limits. Its GIS map shows the approximate boundary. Inside city limits, the City runs its own police, fire and EMS, public works, water and wastewater. Outside, services may come from the county and a utility district.

Use two checks together. The City’s GIS map is a quick visual, but the City says it shows only approximate property boundaries and isn’t a survey. The Harris Central Appraisal District (HCAD) record is more specific: it lists every taxing unit for the account. A home inside city limits shows the City of Humble as a taxing unit. If the City of Houston shows up instead, you’re looking at a Houston home with a Humble mailing address.

2. Every taxing unit on the HCAD record

The Harris Central Appraisal District record lists every taxing unit for the parcel. Match those against the Harris County Tax Office rate table to estimate the total rate. That Truth in Taxation summary lists adopted rates for cities, school districts, MUDs, the county, hospital and flood control districts and more. Add the adopted rate for each unit on the HCAD record to estimate the combined rate before exemptions. Two homes in the same ZIP code can carry different sets of taxing units, so run this for every address you’re serious about. For the yearly appraisal side, see the Texas appraisal notice checklist and the homestead exemption guide.

3. The school district for the exact address

More than one district uses Humble addresses. Humble ISD is headquartered in Humble, but the federal school directory also lists an Aldine ISD school with a Humble mailing address. Use TEA's School District Locator for a first look, then confirm assignments with the serving district.

The National Center for Education Statistics district directory lists Humble ISD at 10203 Birchridge Dr, Humble, TX 77338. Its school directory also lists Aldine ISD’s Francis Elementary at 6525 Greens Rd, Humble, TX 77396, so the ZIP code alone won’t settle the district. TEA’s locator lets you search by district name, number or county and view boundaries, but TEA calls the map informational and asks you to contact the district with boundary questions. Before you write an offer, ask the district which campuses serve that street address.

4. Flood maps and flood history

Review the flood map for the address, the seller's disclosure and flood insurance quotes during your option period. FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center is the official public source for flood hazard maps, and you can search it by street address. FEMA notes that maps you download or print can be superseded by newer ones, so pull a fresh copy for each home. See flood mitigation in the Lake Houston area and the Texas seller disclosure guide.

5. Municipal utility districts (MUDs)

If a district is listed, look it up in TCEQ's Water Districts Database and include its tax rate in your budget. See MUD taxes in Kingwood and Atascocita.

Your ZIP code helps here. Enter it in TCEQ’s database to get an interactive map showing the service area of each water district in that ZIP code. Then look up the district named on the HCAD record by name or number in the same database to see the documents it has filed with TCEQ, and add its adopted rate from the Tax Office summary to your monthly payment estimate.
