Windstorm, flood and surge come first

Galveston County is one of the 14 first-tier coastal counties in TWIA’s designated area. To qualify for a TWIA policy, an applicant must have been denied wind and hail coverage by at least one authorized insurer, and the property generally must be certified as built to applicable codes ⁵. TWIA says the Texas Department of Insurance processed most windstorm certificates (WPI-8s) and offers an online lookup ⁶.

The city’s emergency management flood page notes that the Galveston Bay and Freeport areas are among the most vulnerable stretches of the Texas Gulf Coast to hurricane damage, and it advises residents to find out whether property is in a flood-prone area and to consider flood insurance ⁷.

Texas City ISD and a neighboring district

Federal school data list Texas City ISD’s offices at 1700 9th Ave. N., in Galveston County ¹. Dickinson ISD says its boundary extends south past I-45 to include the Tanger Outlets and the Lago Mar subdivision ¹⁰. TEA’s statewide map is approximate, so confirm the district and campus for each address ¹¹.

The Dike, local history and getting around

The Dike reaches 5.3 miles into Galveston Bay, with boat ramps, fishing piers, a beach area and picnic shelters. The city posts current hours, fees and resident sticker rules on its Dike page ². Other city-listed attractions include the Texas City Museum and Bayou Golf Course ¹⁴.

The Moore Memorial Public Library maintains an online history exhibit, including a section on the April 16, 1947 Texas City Disaster ⁴. For transit, the city points to Gulf Coast Transit District routes and ADA paratransit ³.
