Governance

How The Woodlands Township came to be

After 2007 legislation and a November vote, the Town Center Improvement District expanded across the community, gained a resident-elected board and authority to levy a property tax, and became The Woodlands Township; it took over Community Association services in 2010 1. Howard Hughes bought Morgan Stanley’s interest in The Woodlands in 2011 1.

Villages

The community has grown to nine residential villages plus Town Center, Hughes Landing and The Woodlands Waterway 1.

First village

The Village of Grogan’s Mill opened with the grand opening in 1974 1.

MUDs, the Township and appraisal records

The San Jacinto River Authority’s Woodlands Division, in southern Montgomery County, has been the wholesale water and wastewater provider since 1975 to the 10 municipal utility districts that serve homes in The Woodlands 3. A tax bill can therefore include a MUD, the Township, the county and a school district.
